Max Steiner had a melodic and romantic style. His compositions could make any body weep to tears. This can be felt in his wonderful score for “Gone with the Wind”. Since he had worked under the baton of Gustav Mahler, Steiner inherited much from the classical music. The soundtrack of David Selznick’s spectacular stravaganza is a truly remarkable score in its grandeur, romantic and pompous moments. It contains all 56 tracks.

The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It’s John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John’s pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn’t likely to improve our standing in the world’s eyes. Maybe the point is that it’s supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit “You’re the One That I Want.”

After Carnivàle, Jeff Beal has given HBO another Emmy-nominated score, this time for the tale of sex, politics, and togas known as Rome. There’s a long history of fabulously grand scores in the sword-and-sandals genre (Miklós Rózsa’s Ben-Hur, Alex North’s Cleopatra) but according to Beal HBO wasn’t interested in classic big orchestral compositions, so he worked on a smaller–yet still lush–scale that emphasizes the ethnic instruments that could be found in the farther reaches of the Roman Empire. A Middle Eastern influence, for instance, can clearly be heard on “Rome Main Title Theme,” “The Forum” and “Janus Breaks,” among many others. If there’s one signature sound on the CD, it’s the recurring use of the flute, which can suggest emotions ranging from romantic (”Octavian & Octavia’s Themes”) to melancholy (paired with strings on “Farewells, the Storm”) to dread (combined with percussion on “Caesar’s Seizure”). The album starts running out of steam about two thirds of the way through, however, making one pine for a bit of orchestral bang for one’s buck.
